About

Founded in 2006 by oral historian Dr Pamela Jane Smith, the Personal Histories Project is a non-profit organisation that shares the stories of the people behind archaeology’s past: archaeologists, historians, classicists, scientists, museum professionals, heritage experts, and public figures whose work has had a profound impact on archaeology.

Through oral history recording, curation, and dissemination, as well as public talks and Q&A events with key figures in archaeology, the Personal Histories Project seeks to make archaeology’s fascinating history accessible to both researchers and members of the public.

Originally based in the division of Archaeology at the University of Cambridge, following Pamela’s retirement in 2017, the Personal Histories Project has found a new home in the Department of Archaeology at the University of Southampton. To stay up to date our oral histories, public events, and other news, please join our mailing list and follow us on social media.
